Search intent (also called user intent or keyword intent) is the reason behind a search query — what the user hopes to accomplish. There are four main types: Informational (wants to learn something), Navigational (looking for a specific website or page), Commercial (researching products or services before buying), and Transactional (ready to take action like purchasing or signing up). Matching your content to search intent is one of the most important ranking factors.
Search intent determines what type of content you should create for each keyword. If someone searches 'what is responsive design' (informational), they want a blog post or guide, not a product page. If they search 'buy bootstrap template' (transactional), they want a product page with pricing. Mismatching content to intent means your page won't rank, regardless of how well it's optimised.
Look at modifier words in the query: 'how to', 'what is', 'guide' signal informational intent. 'Best', 'top', 'review', 'vs' signal commercial intent. 'Buy', 'price', 'discount', 'download' signal transactional intent. Brand names or specific website names signal navigational intent. You can also check the current SERP — Google shows what type of content it thinks matches the intent.
