What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of optimising a business's website and online listings so it appears in location-based searches, such as the Google map pack, Google Maps and "near me" queries. It combines a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone details across the web, genuine customer reviews, and location-specific content on the website itself.

What Is Local SEO?

When a search has local intent, for example "emergency plumber in Leeds" or "coffee near me", Google usually shows a map with a small set of business listings above or among the regular results. Those listings come mainly from Google Business Profile data rather than directly from websites, which is why local SEO covers off-site work as well as on-page optimisation. It matters most for businesses that serve customers in a defined area: shops, restaurants, clinics, law firms, trades and other service-area businesses. Organic rankings still matter too, because many local searches also show ordinary web results beneath the map, and Google says a business's position in web results is one of the factors in local ranking. Bing Places and Apple Business Connect play the same role for Bing and Apple Maps, so a complete local strategy keeps all three listings accurate.

How Local SEO Works

Google's own help documentation says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a listing matches the search, which depends on your primary and secondary business categories, your services and your description. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher's location, or from the place named in the query; you cannot change it, but you can make sure your address or service area is accurate. Prominence is how well known the business is, both offline and online. Google says review count and review score factor into local ranking, alongside information it finds across the web such as links, articles and directory listings. The website supports all three. A clear page for each service and each location, with the town or city in headings and copy, strengthens relevance. The business name, address and phone number (NAP) in the footer and on the contact page should match the Business Profile exactly, and a LocalBusiness JSON-LD block (or a more specific type such as Dentist or LegalService) can state the address, telephone, openingHoursSpecification and geo coordinates in machine-readable form. Citations on directories such as Yelp and industry-specific listings repeat the same details, and consistent data across all of them makes it easier for search engines to trust that the information is correct.

Best Practices for Local SEO

Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, choose the most specific primary category available, and fill in every relevant field: hours (including holiday hours), services, attributes, photos and a description written for customers. Use your real business name; adding keywords or locations to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension. Ask satisfied customers for reviews and reply to reviews, positive and negative, in a professional tone, but never offer incentives in exchange for reviews, which Google's policies prohibit. On the website, give each branch its own location page with genuinely local content such as directions, parking, staff, local projects or testimonials, rather than copying one page and swapping the town name, which risks being treated as doorway pages. Put a click-to-call link (<a href="tel:+441130000000">) and the address in the footer so mobile users can act immediately, and embed a map on the contact page. Keep NAP details identical everywhere, including abbreviations and phone formats, and update every listing when you move or change number. Finally, measure results in the Performance section of Google Business Profile (calls, direction requests and website clicks) and in Search Console, filtering for queries that include your town or "near me".

Local SEO and Canvas Builder

Canvas Builder turns a plain-English description into a Bootstrap 5 website, so including your town, services and service area in the prompt gives the generated headings, page copy and SEO meta a local focus from the start. The output uses semantic headings and includes JSON-LD, and you can add or extend a LocalBusiness block with Canvas Builder's free Local Business Schema Generator before you publish or export the site. Keep the address and phone number in the generated footer identical to your Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Google local pack?

The local pack, also called the map pack, is the block of business listings with a map that Google shows for searches with local intent. It usually lists three businesses, with a link to see more in Google Maps. Listings are drawn from Google Business Profile and ranked mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

How is local SEO different from regular SEO?

Regular SEO aims to rank web pages in the standard organic results for any searcher, wherever they are. Local SEO adds a location layer: it targets map results and local organic results, and relies on off-site signals such as your Business Profile, reviews and citations. The two overlap, because strong on-page SEO also helps local rankings.

Can a business without a shop front do local SEO?

Yes. Service-area businesses such as plumbers, cleaners or mobile hairdressers can create a Google Business Profile, hide their street address and define the areas they serve instead. They should still build service and area pages on their website that describe the work they do in each location.

Does schema markup help local SEO?

LocalBusiness structured data does not directly raise rankings, but it states your name, address, phone number, opening hours and coordinates in a format search engines can read without guessing. It keeps your website's details consistent with your Business Profile and helps search engines understand the business. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test after adding it.
